Thanks for the great question! I think the top three qualities needed to succeed as a Functional Workday Consultant at Kognitiv include the following:
1) Solid communication skills - Whether you are communicating with your clients electronically or live, it is critical to understand the questions being asked or the problem being relayed. If it is unclear, a good consultant will attempt to clarify the need or requirement by re-stating it to ensure that they understand what is desired. Often, a quick phone call is wise to ensure that the client and consultant are on the same page about what problem or issue needs the consultant's attention.
2) Strong analytical thinking - Being able to determine the root cause of an issue takes an ability to think about the problem analytically; brainstorming all the possible causes and eliminating them through testing/ troubleshooting until the true cause is determined. Once a solution (or functional enhancement) is designed and built, it's also critical to thoroughly test your configuration-- this, again, requires considering various scenarios from multiple user viewpoints and all the ways that it might "break."
3) Ability to prioritize and manage one's own workload - With the variety of projects and tickets that we work as functional consultants, it is really important to maintain vigilant about how much room you may have in your day or week to take on new requests. No one has a crystal ball to see the future workload, so it becomes important to monitor on a daily basis to ensure you're continuing to take on new work while not over-extending yourself, and that you ask for assistance if you find yourself in the situation that all of your projects need immediate attention. Failure to do so could lead to poor results for the client(s) and burnout for you as the consultant.
There are a lot of other qualities that good functional consultants possess (initiative and resourcefulness also come to mind), but I think these three really help ensure positive outcomes for both the clients and the consultants!
